Just as Jake yawned, Emma, holding two coffee cups, tapped the car window with her elbow, a thin light like glass before sunset shining behind her.
Jake lowered his feet from the dashboard and opened the passenger door.
"Late, aren't we? While I've been wearing out my nerves, have you been off vacationing?" he quipped. "Do great detectives yawn when their nerves wear thin?" Emma retorted, handing over one of the cups. "Isn't that how it is for you?" "Just pay attention, please," Emma said, furrowing her brow, placing her cup in the holder, and getting ready.
"Ah, this coffee hits the spot. Should've asked you to bring some blueberry pie too." "Focus on the job, please. ...Hey, isn't that the person who left earlier? They've come back."
Jake looked in the direction Emma was pointing. "Ah, that guy? He's just a postal worker. Probably."
Emma sighed. "Probably, huh? Be serious, please." "Ah, thinking about that blueberry pie. Maybe we can go have some tomorrow."
"Really..." Emma sighed heavily, but with a slight smile.
Then, the person from the apartment emerged again, rapidly. Emma nudged Jake, scanning left and right. The person was heading in the opposite direction from before, looking somewhat hurried.
Jake adjusted his glasses, "Whoops, this does look genuinely suspicious."
They carefully got out of the car and started following at a distance. Emma whispered to Jake with a hint of tension, "Where could they be going?"
"Let's keep it light and talk about delicious pies, Emma."
