The Kola Superdeep Borehole was initiated by the Soviet Union to explore the Earth's interior. Drilling began in 1970, and by 1989, it reached a depth of approximately 12,262 meters (about 40,230 feet), maintaining its record as the deepest artificial point on Earth. The project's primary objective was to investigate the physical and chemical properties of the Earth's crust. Researchers gained valuable data on geological processes under extreme conditions, such as high temperatures and pressures. However, drilling further became impossible due to higher than expected temperatures (around 180°C). This borehole contributed significantly to scientific discoveries and is considered a major milestone in earth sciences.
